Note
Thomas Irvine of Midbrake, Shetland, was the son of James Irvine (1745-1813), merchant, and Elizabeth Gauden of Fetlar. He was born in 1790 in the Haa of Midbrake. He spent some time teaching at a home for the deaf and dumb in London and returned to Shetland in 1820 where, from 1827, he surveyed lands. He died in 1877 and was succeeded by his brother Gilbert W. Irvine. James Thomas Irvine, son of Gilbert Irvine and Margaret Hoseason of Fetlar, was born on 29 September 1826. He was the nephew of Thomas Irvine of Midbrake. Irvine worked as an architect in Peterborough and was associated with Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) and John Loughborough Pearson (1817-1897). As an architect he was involved in the Peterborough Cathedral Tower Rebuilding Scheme and in the restoration of Bath Abbey. He died on 6 June 1900.
