Note
The Shetland Development Council was founded in 1957. Its main aim was to assist the development of the basic Shetland industries of agriculture, fishing, woollens and tourism, 'and such other industries as may be based in Shetland'. It was replaced in April 1959 by the Shetland Council of Social Service. The main aim of the Shetland Council of Social Service is: 'To promote the general good of the people of Shetland, and to assist the work of statutory authorities and voluntary organisations engaged in advancing education, developing resources, furthering health, improving the skill of country craftsmen, relieving poverty, distress or sickness or in pursuing any objects which are now or hereafter may be deemed by law to be charitable.' The change was made mainly because the nature of the Shetland Development Council meant it was not eligible for grant funding. Both organisations were and are focused on the principle of improving the prosperity and welfare of Shetland.
