The company went through various changes of name and ownership. The original merchant was James Hay, then James Hay & Son (with his son William). Next came a merger with Charles Ogilvy as Hay & Ogilvy. After the partnership resulted in bankruptcy the new business of Hay & Co. was founded in 1844 by William Hay and two of his sons. The company ran shops in various locations throughout Shetland, supplying household goods, and were also the islands' largest supplier of coal and timber. The company were fischurers and fishing vessel builders and owners, and by the last half of the 19th century their boats fished as far away as the Davis Straits.
