George Maxwell Nelson was born at South Califf, Tingwall, on 7 October 1901, the second child of George Nelson and Agnes Henderson. He built up an extensive dairy business and sheep farm at Veensgarth, Tingwall. On the introduction of the Northern Area Agricultural Executive' Committee he was appointed a member, and served in that capacity for 25 years. He also played an active part in promoting agricultural shows in Tingwall and Lerwick. Nelson took services as a lay reader for the Church of Scotland in many districts, and served as elder of the Tingwall Kirk for 40 years, including 25 years as session clerk. In 1965 he published a historical work, The Story of Tingwall Kirk. He was a founder member of Shetland Folk Society, and its president for many years; and a founder member and president of Althing Social Group and participant in its debates. He died on 31 December 1976. As well as Nelson's personal and business papers, the collection contains record material he collected from time to time.
