      Note

Andrew Dishington Mathewson was born on 2 April 1799 in Yell, the son of Laurence Mathewson and Marion Fordyce. The family moved to Fetlar in 1809. Mathewson was tutored by his aunt, Dorothy Fordyce, and was a teacher himself by the age of 14. He tutored in Lerwick and at the parish school at South Yell and continued various types of teaching until 1878. Mathewson was involved in the local community and served as a session clerk for the parish. He was a busy land-surveyor. He married Barbara Robertson of Aywick and together they had 12 children, including Andrew Dishington Mathewson (born 1834) who became a teacher like his father and was also registrar for the district. Andrew Dishington Mathewson senior died on 1 March 1887.
