The progenitor of the Bruce family of Sumburgh was William Bruce of Symbister, who arrived in Shetland in the 1570s. He received a feu charter of Sumburgh, in the parish of Dunrossness, in 1592. The family built up a large estate in Unst, the South Mainland of Shetland and elsewhere. Members of the family, notably John Bruce (1735-1788), John Bruce (1767 - 1831), John Bruce (1798-1885) and John Bruce (1837-1907) played an active part in public affairs in Shetland, and the collection reflects their activities.
