The Shetland Archives collection is a rich and varied resource that is open to everyone.
The archives can help you learn about all aspects of Shetland's past. If you want to know more about your family history, about local people or businesses, or about the work of local authorities and other public bodies, there are papers in the archives that will tell you more. We also have the most extensive library of Shetland books anywhere in the world.
Our catalogue contains short descriptions of the records we look after. We are constantly adding to our catalogue, but if you cannot find the material you are looking for, please get in touch and we will be happy to help if we can.
How to search the catalogue
You can use our catalogue to search for material held in our repository.
To do so enter your search words in the box at the top of the page. For an exact hit put the words in inverted commas - "Mary Nicolson", for instance. You can also use the advanced search feature.
Once you have a list of hits, you can note down the reference numbers and come to the archives to look at the documents.
There are also some records available digitally. You can browse these records by clicking on Digital Archives.
Copying records
We are happy to copy records if possible. There is a small charge for copying. Please contact archives staff and we can arrange to make copies for you.
Further information
Archives staff are always delighted to help with your research. If you have a question, please feel free to to discuss it with us. We are also happy to look at potential donations.
We hope you enjoy using the archives.
